Study Guide: Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch at BAM

This week, Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch returned to New York City to present Bausch’s “Café Müller” (1978) and “The Rite of Spring” (1975) as part of the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s 2017 Next Wave Festival. Running September 14-24, seeing this program in this venue is particularly exciting, given that it was this program that Bausch presented at BAM for Tanztheater Wuppertal’s 1984 New York debut. While all performances are currently sold out, here are some things to consider before, during, and after the performance if you were fortunate enough to procure a ticket.

Before the show:

During the show:

  • Pay attention to gender roles and the interaction between genders
  • Keep an eye out for repetition and the effect that it produces in “Café Müller”
  • Consider the functionality of each performer in “Café Müller”
  • Stay in the audience for all of intermission

After the show:

  • Compare your notes to Brian Seibert’s NYT review. If you’re curious to know how the pieces were received in 1984, check out this one as well.
